Love spring, HATE allergies!

Published by tinamarie at 9:42 am under Parenting Edit This

Here in NC the azaleas are in full bloom. Our yard is an array of beautiful pink, white and purple flowers accented by the gorgeous blooms of the dogwood trees. Grass is green once again, replacing the ugly, dead brown covering our yard throughout the winter. Birds fill the fragrant salt air with the sweet sound of glorious songs. Playing on the back deck rail are three small squirrels and a variety of small, baby lizards.

Spring makes me happy! Signs of live are seen everywhere and the sun shine abundantly, warming my skin and my soul. I am no longer stuck indoors in a dreary house, but frequently sit on my front porch with Larry drinking coffee while we watch the baby fish and their families swim freely in our pond. Our three dogs love playing in the yard, chasing their favorite balls around. Winter coats and sweaters are hidden back in the back of the closet and the cute, flowery summer wear is ready for wear. Life is good!

Then there are allergies; the pure evil of spring.

Our noses begin running abundantly and we all take our turn sniffing…GROSS! My eight year old frequently wipes his nose on his shirt sleeve…Gross again! Sneezing and coughing replace the sounds of shivering.

Tears flow from our itchy allergies eyes, and we all have dark circles making their home under them. We look like we have spent too much time out partying at night, when we have had no fun at all, unless you count using box after box of tissues fun.

My oldest son has illness induced asthma, which is most definitely affected by allergies. Instead of enjoying the great outdoors and beautiful weather, he spends his time inside with the windows of his room tightly shut. His four medicines he takes are literal life savers, but it is a painful reminder of his disease. He hates taking them, but knows he has to for his own health. Instead of singing along with the birds, his song is the recurrent sound of coughing. I am sympathetic, since I am an asthma sufferer as well, although mine isn’t as bad, but sometimes I just want him to be quiet. I feel bad about that, but still, the thought crosses my mind.

We were admiring the flowers a few days ago, discussing how wondrous God’s artwork is when my son stated, “I don’t see flowers, I see pollen…nasty, ugly pollen”. It broke my heart knowing he can’t see the beauty of new life because of his allergies.

When all is said and done and I go to sleep at night, after taking Allegra D and motrin, I feel a sense of wonder and excitement. No matter how bad our allergies are, I still love spring!

I know EXACTLY how you all feel. The weather is so NICE outdoors this time of year, but I too end up spending most of my time indoors because I have fairly severe seasonal allergies, which also aggravate my bronchial asthma, and often lead to restricted airway disease or pneumonia. I HATE this time of year! It’s the cruel irony of spring. It looks so inviting, but if I indulge in all nature has to offer, I spend days or weeks paying for it! If only plants could reproduce without pollen… *sigh*
